DO YOU KNOW KIDS WHO STRUGGLE WITH EMOTIONS, MOODS and/or BEHAVIOR?

CBT is the most widely used (and extensively researched) form of psychotherapy.

CBT techniques help people to identify unhelpful or negative beliefs and replace them with helpful and positive beliefs.

Changes in these patterns of thinking help to transform troublesome emotions and behaviors, which in turn further reinforce healthier belief systems.

You can make these powerful CBT techniques accessible for young people with kid-friendly CBT tools such as MIXED EMOTIONS.

SHOW ME HOW YOU FEEL!

The Mixed Emotions materials make it easy for kids to put complex feelings into words.

MIXED EMOTIONS

Often children and teens act out because they don’t really understand their emotions or don’t know how to express them.

Mixed Emotions gives you a hands-on tool for helping kids figure out—and articulate—their feelings.

The colorful board engages children’s interest. It has 100 words that describe emotions. Children use the 40 color-coded chips to “show” you which emotions they have experienced.

You can use the board as a simple check-in activity–a way for a child to bring you up to date on their recent experiences, feelings and moods.

The Mixed Emotions board can also help an individual, group or family think about and process a significant event. The board and chips give them a concrete way to share their perceptions and emotional reactions to what has happened.

You can also play a game with the (included) Mixed Emotions cards.

MIXED EMOTIONS is a versatile tool for child-friendly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

MULTIPLE USES

The Mixed Emotions materials are very versatile. You can use these materials on a daily basis with all of your clients. From check-in activities to games to CBT activities, the materials provide a tactile and visual component to the therpay process, enhancing the learning process.  This is vitally important with children, but clients of all ages enjoy and benefit from a multi-sensory approach.

DIFFERENTIATE EMOTIONS

Most people are pretty good at naming the basic emotions: happy, sad, angry and scared. But our emotions are much more complex and interesting than that. With the wide variety of feelings words on the board, you can help clients differentiate between complex emotions. They can even stack chips to show the intensity of emotions.

And because the board encourages people to think about ALL of the possible emotions, you can help clients think carefully and identify hidden emotions that may lie beneath the surface of more obvious emotions. This simple activity can provide helpful information for incorporating into the therapy session.

PLAY A GAME!

Mixed Emotions includes 90 cards. Each card presents a person confronting a situation that might evoke “mixed emotions.” The persons presented included children, teens and adults, which helps clients understand multiple viewpoints. The cards can be used to play a game: great for an introductory activity or for a group lesson.

You can also incorporate the cards into a variety of CBT lessons. (See next section.)

CBT ACTIVITIES

Mixed Emotions includes an eight-page booklet with examples of ways that you can incorporate the materials into therapy sessions and homework assignments.  Activities include:
  Let’s THINK About Feelings
  Lights, Camera, Action!
  Be a Feelings Detective

These activities enable you to teach your clients a basic concept of CBT: We can identify unhelpful patterns of thoughts and replace them with more realistic and helpful beliefs. This change in perception can lead to positive transformation of troubling emotions and behaviors.
